Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of formula <FORM:1065466/C2/1> wherein Z is an a -hydroxymethylene group or a carbonyl group and R is hydrogen or a C2- 4 acyl group, and their preparation by (a) reaction of an androst-2-en-1a -ol with iodomethyl zinc iodide or a dimer thereof; (b) oxidation of a 1-hydroxy group to a 1-keto group; (c) reaction of an androst-2-en-1-one with dimethylsulphoxonium methylide; or (d) basic hydrolysis of a 17-ester. The compounds of the invention have anabolic activity.
