Abstract

1,064,309. Winding safety devices. VEREINIGTE OSTERREICHISCHE EISEN-UND STAHLWERKE A.G. Oct. 1, 1965 [Oct. 2, 1964], No. 41818/65. Headings B8B and B8L. [Also in Division F2] A hoisting safety device comprises main and auxiliary ropes or chains 9, 10 passing from a common load over pulleys or chain wheels 12, 11 on to main and auxiliary winding drums 1, 3, the normally unstressed auxiliary drum 3 being adapted to be coupled to the main drum 1 in the event of main rope or chain rupture, the coupling comprising a friction clutch and a rigid coupling arranged to be engaged once the clutch has started slipping. The auxiliary winding drum 3 comprises a drum portion 8 and a portion 5 both freely mounted on a shaft 4. The portion 5 is driven in synchronism with the main drum 1 through gears 6, 7 and the portions 5 and 8 of drum 3 are coupled through the friction clutch 17, Fig. 3 (not shown). Pawls pivoted intermediate their length, to the auxiliary drum portion 5, are located in an. annular recess in the adjacent end of the drum portion 8. The inner periphery of said recess takes the form of a ratchet wheel, while the outer periphery is provided with spaced recess in which a roller on end of the pawl may set when aligned therewith. In operation, upon rupture of the main rope the auxiliary rope takes the load and unwinds rotating the auxiliary drum portion 8 against the clutch friction until, the pawl/pawls engage said recess/recesses whereupon the ratchet wheel becomes engaged by the remote end of the pawls: a drive can be transmitted from the main drum to the auxiliary drum.
