A vibration system for a percussive tool, such as a soil or concrete tamper, comprises resilient elements, such as springs 3, 4 disposed between an energizing mass 1 and a working mass 2 such that when the working mass is vibrated one spring is compressed while the other is relieved of loading and vice versa, one spring being disposed wholly or partly within the other. In other embodiments the energizing mass may be bell-shaped slidable within a cylindrical working mass having a closed bottom or the mass 1 may have a hollow stem secured, at each end, to a plate, the working mass having a rod slidable in the stem and provided with fingers engaging with slots in the wall of the stem. A similar embodiment may also be provided wherein the working mass is of cylindrical form having slots in its wall for engagement with fingers for on a rod of the energizing mass. The energizing mass may be vibrated through cams driven by an electric or petrol driven motor.
