In apparatus for measuring the torque in, or elongation of, a loaded shaft, two flanges integral with the shaft and axially spaced along it carry respectively a winding on a core and an armature, relative displacement between core and armature producing a corresponding inductive variation in the winding. In Fig. 1, a hollow shaft 11 is produced by turning with spaced integral flanges 13, 15 and coaxial sleeves 12, 14; alternatively the flanges and sleeves may be welded to the shaft. An inductive transducer 20 comprises two ferrite cores (not shown), each with annular primary and secondary windings, mounted on a support 18 which is screwed to a sleeve 16 mounted fast on sleeve 12, and an armature (not shown) adjustably mounted on a support 21 which is fixed via a sleeve 17 on sleeve 14. Coupling transformers comprising rotary coils 24 and stator coils 26 provide for the energization of the transducer winding and the transmission of the measuring signal to an indicating device (not shown).
