Abstract

1,063,433. Sand filter. PATERON CANDY INTERNATIONAL Ltd. Jan 12, 1966 [Jan. 14, 1965], No. 1777/65. Heading B1D. In a sand filter, in which means responsive to a pressure differential between inlet and outlet flow is used to interrupt the flow, cause a backwash of a predetermined quantity of liquid, and then restore normal flow, a certain differential communicated to either side of a diaphragm (29) from inlet pipe 8 and outlet pipe 4 respectively opens a valve (27') to allow flow from pipe 4, via pipe 24 to operate valve piston 26, thus opening valve 22. With valve 22 open, water syphons from tank 5 into tank 17 where firstly float 15 is actuated to close valve 6 to interrupt the flow, and then float 16 is actuated to open valve 7 to allow backflush from the unsyphoned water in tank 5. As tank 17 then empties through pipe 19, floats 16 and 17 operate to close valve 7, and the open valve 6 to restore normal flow. Once valve 6 is fully open, and this will occur before the water level in tank 5 has risen sufficiently to start a flow through syphon 21, the pressure differential between pipes 3 and 4 will be low enough to close valve 27'.
