Vapours, treating with.-High-pressure steam for disinfecting, or for treating yarns or threads for manufacturing purposes, is admitted in small volume to a chamber a from the steam jacket b through a valve-controlled inlet 4. The steam escapes from the chamber a through a lightly-loaded valve 5 so that the pressure in the chamber remains low and some condensation takes place. After treatment, the inlet 4 is closed, an air inlet 8 is opened, and steam and air are extracted from the chamber by means of an ejector 13 supplied with steam from the jacket. In a modification, steam is supplied to the chamber a through a valve-controlled by-pass 10 from the pipe 7 supplying the jacket b.
