Photographic images are obtained by exposing to a two-tone subject a substantially unhardened gelatino-silver halide emulsion layer, developing the exposed emulsion layer by means of an aqueous activator solution containing potassium carbonate and guanidine carbonate in the presence of both a tanning developing agent and a substantially non- tanning developing agent so as to develop a silver image in hardened gelatine in the highlight regions of the layer and also a silver image is substantially unhardened gelatine in the shadow regions of the layer, and transferring in the presence of moisture at least a thin stratum of the shadow regions of the layer to a support such as an absorbent paper support. 4-phenylcatechol and 4-methoxy-alphanaphthol may be used as the respective developing agents and may both be present in the emulsion layer. The activator solution may contain a sequestering agent e.g. ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid di, tri- or tetrasodium salt.
