Abstract

Structural elements of cementitious material containing inserts or apertures are made by casting cementious material in a mould cavity coated with release agent at least two walls of which are formed of pre-cast cementitious material in which support means for the inserts or for forms for the apertures have been incorporated, the mould walls being disassembled after the cementitious material forming the element has become self-supporting. A battery of moulds may be formed to produce a plurality of elements. A mould wall 20 is formed by casting concrete on a horizontal steel surface within the confines of a U-shaped wooden frame 24 which forms part of the mould wall, wooden or plastic support means (60) being incorporated therein during the casting (Fig. 4, not shown). The walls are assembled in a row by means of lifting cranes engaging hooks screwed into threaded sockets provided along the upper edges of the mould walls, and wooden end stops 22 provided to complete the moulds. The two end mould walls are provided with internally threaded sockets on their outer faces, whereby bracing members 34 may be bolted thereto. Inserts such as electrical switch housings are nailed to the support means (60) and cementitious material cast into the mould cavities. When this has set the moulds are disassembled whereupon the nails are pulled off the support means leaving the insert incorporated in the formed element.
