Abstract

<PICT:1059315/C1/1> A polarizable ferroelectric composition consists of a material selected from ABCD of the Figure modified by the addition of at least one element of the group thorium and tungsten, thorium being added as a substituent for part of the lead in an amount of from 0.1-8 atom per cent and tungsten being added in an amount equivalent to 0.1-5.0 weight per cent WO3. Additional lead may be added in stoiciometric proportions to balance the added tungsten and thorium. Up to 25 atom per cent of the lead may be replaced by barium, calcium and/or strontium. The composition may also include 0.1-5 weight per cent in respect of their oxides of at least one element selected from the group niobium, tantalum, yttrium and the rare earths except cerium. The composition may be prepared by wet milling a mixture of the precursor oxides (thorium may be present as the oxalate), fired at 850 DEG C. for about 2 hours, crushed, milled, mixed with a binder and lubricant consisting of equal parts of water and an aqueous dispersion of a solid paraffin, pressed into discs and fired at about 1300 DEG C. for about 45 minutes in a lead containing atmosphere.
