Abstract

A piezo-electric ceramic comprises mixed crystals of PbTiO3 and PbZrO3 having a PbTiO3 content of from 10 to 60 mol per cent and preferably 40 to 50 mol per cent, in which up to 40% of the tetravalent atoms may be replaced by Sn atoms and up to 30% of the Pb atoms by alkaline-earth metal atoms, and including from 0.05 to 5% by weight of one or more oxides of a rare earth, e.g. Y and La, the mixture including, as a sintering agent, from 0.1 to 1% of an oxide of Bi and/or W. Oxides and/or carbonates of the constituents are mixed and heated at 860 DEG C., the reaction products being ground and mixed with the sintering agent and a combustible binder, e.g. polyvinyl alcohol. The sintering is carried out in an atmosphere rich in oxygen and containing lead oxide. To this end, the platinum casing in which the mixture is sintered may contain small plates consisting of a mixture of PbO and ZrO2 in a weight ratio of 1.8: 1. If an air-tight casing is used, it is sufficient to add excess PbO to the mixture.
