Abstract
1,059,108. Cyclic particle accelerators. CESKOSLOVENSKA AKADEMIE VED. Oct. 22, 1963 [Nov. 2, 1962], No. 41632/63. Heading HID. The yield of accelerated particles in a betatron or synchrotron is increased by increasing the number of accelerating cycles in a unit of time by connecting at least part of the magnet windings to a supply of alternating voltage 2 which is rectified or switched to produce a voltage 3 resulting in unidirectional current pulses 1 in the magnet windings separated by periods 4 of zero current, the duration and phase of which may be adjustable. In one arrangement (Fig. 2, not shown) the magnet winding (6) is connected to the supply terminals (12, 13) through a full-wave rectifier bridge of ignitrons (7 to 10) each of which is connected (at 14) to a device for controlling the moment of ignition. In an alternative arrangement (Fig. 3, not shown) the magnet winding is divided into halves (6<SP>1</SP> and 6<SP>11</SP>) connected to the supply (12, 13) through a halfwave rectifier bridge.
