Abstract

A glass composition consists essentially, in per cent by weight, of: SiO2, 50.0-60.0; Li2O, 0.1-1.0; B2O3, 5.0-10.0; MgO, 11.0-18.0 Sb2O,3 0.0-1.0; Al2O3, 18.0-25.0; Fe2O3, 0.0-2.0; the ratio of Al2O3 to MgO ranging from 1.0 to 2.2 Na2O and K2O may be used in addition to Li2O. The composition may be melted, e.g. at 2675 DEG F., formed into cullet or marbles, which may be remelted at e.g 2500 DEG F. and drawn into fibres of high tensile strength by known method, e.g. through a platinum nozzle. The fibres may be coated with a finish compatible with epoxy resin, and formed into yarn, which may then be coated with epoxy resin. The glass fibres may be used to reinforce artficial resin, e.g. for the manufacture of pressure bottles and tanks.
