Abstract

A glass composition consists essentially of, in weight per cent, SiO2 67-74%; Al2O3 6.5-10%; Na2O 6.5-10%; MgO 6.5-10%; CaO 3-6%; Sb2O3 0-2.5%. Less than 0.02% of TiO2 is present as an impurity. A suitable batch is melted at a temperature of 2600-2900 DEG F. (1425-1595 DEG C.). The molten glass may then be drawn directly into fibres through a platinum bushing at a temperature of 2300-2900 DEG F. (1260-1595 DEG C.) at speeds of from 5000 to 10,000 feet per minute or may be made into marbles for subsequent use. The fibres are drawn to diameters of from 0.0001 to 0.004 inch and have an average tensile strength ranging from 462 to 689 thousand p.s.i. and an average modulus of rupture ranging from 10.7 to 12.3 million p.s.i.
