Apparatus for tearing tough materials in bale form is characterized in that a pair of feed rollers for feeding a bale in a vertical downwards direction with a gripping action is followed by a pair of tearing cylinders rotatable at different peripheral speeds and having axially-spaced cutting teeth, the teeth of one cylinder engaging between the teeth of the other cylinder and the medial vertical plane of engagement of the teeth coinciding with the middle vertical plane between the feed rollers. As shown, a bale 1 of synthetic rubber is gripped and fed by rollers 3 to the zone between tearing cylinders 5, 6 which are rotatable in opposite directions, each tearing cylinder comprising toothed discs splined to a shaft and separated by plain intermediate discs. The diameter of the cylinder 6 is slightly greater than that of the cylinder 5. The material torn by the cylinders drops to a further tearing zone comprising a tearing cylinder 9 rotatable in the same direction as the cylinder 6 and cooperable with a tearing comb 8. The tearing cylinders are shielded outside the tearing zones by casing sections 7, 16. Alternatively, the cylinders 5, 6 may be followed by a further pair of tearing cylinders.
