Abstract
Zinc oxide, or ores containing it and optionally lead, is reduced using a carbonaceous reducing agent and the resulting zinc vapour is dissolved in molten zinc or lead. The latent heat of vapourization of the zinc, with or without the heat of solution of zinc in molten lead, is then used to distil the zinc in a refining evaporator under reduced pressure. When the primary condensation is in liquid zinc, sufficient zinc is removed from the primary condenser so that the solubility limit of the metallic impurities in liquid zinc is not exceeded. In the case of condensing in lead, the lead is cycled between the secondary evapourator and the primary condenser and the "bleed" is taken from the secondary evapourator.
