Abstract

Glycidyl trialkyl ammonium halides are made by reacting, in the liquid phase, a trialkyl amine in which each alkyl group contains 1-20 carbon atoms, with an epihalohydrin in which the halogen is Cl or Br, in the presence of an anhydrous solvent, as hereinafter defined, which is a C2- 10 saturated hydrocarbon ether, a C3- 6 alkyl ketone, a C3- 8 alkyl alkanoate, a mixture of chloroform and 10-80% by weight, based on weight of mixture, of a C5- 10 acyclic saturated hydrocarbon, or a mixture thereof. The anhydrous solvent is defined as containing up to 2% by weight of water. The preferred amines are those having at least two C1- 4 alkyl groups, e.g. trimethylamine and the dimethyl-C10- 18-alkylamines. Suitable reaction temperatures lie in the range 0-80 DEG C. The examples relate to glycidyl trimethyl ammonium chloride and bromide.
