Abstract
1,055,973. Fuel injection pumps; starting fuel injection engines. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. May 27, 1964 [May 27, 1963], No. 20999/63. Headings F1A and F1B. Pistons 23 of a fuel injection pump are reciprocated by a face cam 29 on a shaft 27 which also rotates a valve plate 31 connecting in turn each cylinder to its respective outlet 20 on the pressure stroke, the other cylinders being in communication with the housing 18 connected at 34 to a feed pump. The valve plate 31 rotates between carbon rings 24, 32 the ring 24 having spigots mounted in enlarged ends of the cylinder bores. A sleeve 35, axially movable through a yoke 39 by a diaphragm 47 subject to the pressure in engine manifold 11, Fig. 1 (not shown), has a flange 36 which controls the outward movement of the pistons 23. A part 44 controls the maximum stroke and it is pivoted for manual operation to give excess fuel for starting. In addition to the spring 49 the diaphragm 47 may be further controlled by a spring connected to the control of the engine throttle valve 12, Fig. 1., to increase fuel for acceleration. The pump may be mounted on the engine distributor shaft.
