Feb. 5, 1965 [Feb. 5, 1964 (2); Feb. 14, 1964; Feb. 20, 1964 (3)], No. 5117/65. Heading F2E. A spot-type disc brake comprises a brake carrier, a caliper 2 extending around the edge of the brake disc, an hydraulic actuating cylinder 19 provided with an adjusting device and mounted in a bore in the caliper and an axially expandible hand operated device 18 interposed between the brake cylinder and a directly applied pad, the caliper 2 being mounted, with the interposition of a resilient bush for axial movement on a cylindrical sleeve 24 secured to the brake carrier, a second adjusting device 6 which also acts as a centring device being provided between the guide sleeve and the actuating cylinder 19. The device 18 includes a ball 39 and a recessed plate 38 rotatable by a cable to provide hand brake actuation. The cylindrical sleeve 24 has a flange pivoted at one extremity to the carrier and secured at the other by a split pin 29 (Fig. 2, not shown). Removal of the pin permits rotation of the sleeve about the pivot to permit access to the pads. The cylinder 19 carries a screwed pin 48 rotatable by a cam and pawl device 5 to take up clearance when the movement of piston 17 becomes excessive. The device 6 comprises a corrugated spring in an external groove on the cylinder 19 and yieldingly engages the inside of sleeve 24, slipping when the clearances become excessive. The caliper is provided with cavities 105 (Fig. 4, not shown) which may be partly or completely filled with oscillation damping means sealed off from the atmosphere by plugs. A wire spring may be provided to urge the pads apart.
