Abstract

1,053,716. Synthetic lubricants. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. July 23, 1965 [Aug. 20, 1964], No. 34089/64. Heading C5F. An ester-base lubricating composition comprises a major proportion of an ester and a minor proportion of a substituted imidazoline of general formula wherein R is a heterocyclic or substituted aryl group and R<SP>1</SP> is an alkyl group of up to 4 carbon atoms. Up to 5% of the imidazoline may be present. Numerous examples of specific compounds are given. The base oil may be an ester of a dicarboxylic acid and a monohydric alcohol, e.g. dinonyl or di-(2-ethylhexyl) sebacate, diisooctyl or di-2,2,4-trimethylpentyl azelate, or di-3,5,5-trimothylhexyl adipate; or a complex ester or polyester such as those described in Specification 1,036,695. Optional additives include polyalkylene glycols and mono- and di-ethers and esters thereof; polyacrylic esters; triphenyl, tritolyl or trixylyl phosphorothionate; triphenyl or tritolyl phosphate; amines; diphenyl - 2,2 - bis - (chloro - methyl) - 3 - chloropropyl phosphorothionate; chlorinated di- or poly-phenyls; substituted oxetane polymers, e.g. a polymer of 3,3-bischloromethyl) - oxetane; monochloro methyl phosphonic acid salts of tertiary alkyl primary amines; 2,6 - di - tert - butyl - 4 - methyl-phenol, alkylated bisphenols such as 4,4<SP>1</SP>-methylene-bis- (2,6 - di - tert - butyl phenol); substituted triazoles and benztriazoles; pyridylamines; sebacic, adipic or azelaic acid; calcium petroleum sulphonates; and polydimethyl siloxanes.
