Abstract

1,053,380. Purifying exhaust gases. PETER SPENCE & SONS Ltd. Oct. 2, 1963 [Oct. 6, 1962], No. 37921/62. Heading F1B. A catalytic exhaust purifying system comprises a first catalyst bed of relatively high activity material a second catalyst bed of relatively lower activity material and a supply of secondary air which is directed to the first bed until a predetermined temperature is reached therein and then at least partially switched to the second bed. The secondary air supply pipe has one branch leading direct to the inlet to the first bed and a by-pass branch around the first bed to the inlet to the second bed, the flow through the by-pass being controlled by a valve actuated by a thermocouple in the first bed. During warm-up operation of the engine the oxidation of the exhaust gases occurs mainly in the first bed in which the temperature rises rapidly; at a predetermined temperature the secondary air is switched to the second bed to prevent overheating of the first bed. The catalyst in the first bed is a mixture of copper oxide and chromium oxide on active alumina of high surface area i. e. 100 to 300 square metres per gram, and in the second bed copper oxide on alumina of low surface area i. e. less than 5 square metres per gm. A silencer may be added to the catalyst beds.
