[Also in Divisions D1 and G3] A web of material being corrugated is formed into a loop between a positive drive and corrugator rolls, the size of the loop controlling the speed of positive drive in such a manner that the portion of the web entering the corrugator rolls is in a substantially tension free condition. As described, paper 2 from a supply reel 1 passes round a guide roll 3, and rolls 4 driven faster than the paper, to be nipped between a driven steel roll 6 and a rubber-surfaced roll 7 which feed it over a sensing roll 8 to pass between corrugating rolls 11, 12. As the corrugated paper passes on round corrugating roll 12, paste is applied from a tray by rolls 14, 15 and backing material 17 is led in and stuck on to the corrugated paper by a pressure roll 18. Sensing roll 8 is supported pendulum fashion on arms 9, one of which actuates a switch 37 or 38, if the size of the loop between driven roll 6 and corrugating rolls 11, 12 changes sufficiently, so that an electric motor 40 is operated in the appropriate direction to restore loop size by adjusting a variable speed gear 27 associated with a chain drive to roll 6 from corrugating roll 12. Sensing roll 8 is driven from pressure roll 18 faster than the paper so that, by virtue of friction, tension on the corrugator side of the loop is reduced. Control of motor 40 by rheostats instead of switches is referred to. A modification in which changes in the size of a loop of paper formed by gravity between the driven roll and the corrugating rolls is detected by a photo-cell which controls a motor correcting loop size, is referred to.
