A typewriter 10 comprises a casing 11 having an opening 16 and a movable cover 20 arranged over said casing, whereby links 31 pivotally articulated to members 26, 34 on the casing and cover, respectively permit said cover to be lifted upwardly and pivotally displaced towards paper carriage 13 or keyboard 12 to provide access to opening 16 housing type bars 17 and ink ribbon mechanism 18. A spring 35 acts as a toggle retaining the cover in any one of the displaced positions.
