Hydrocarbon fuels contain 10-1000 p.p.m. of an anti-microbial compound of formula where the nitro group is substituted at any of the available positions on the benzene ring and Y and Z are hydrogen, C 1- C 4 alkoxy, C 1 -C 4 alkyl, cyano or nitro groups. The agent may be added to the fuel as a concentrate in a combustible solvent e.g. benzene or toluene. Fuels specified are jet fuel and fuel oil. The fuel may also contain organo-lead, organo-aluminium and boron and phosphorus containing compounds.
