Abstract
1,048,614. Valves. PARKER-HANNIFIN CORPORATION. Feb. 19, 1964 [March 11, 1963], No. 6985/64. Heading F2V. [Also in Division G3] A multiple spool valve assembly for controlling the operation of a corresponding number of fluid-actuated motors 5a, 5b or 5c (Fig. 1, not shown), comprises a housing 4 having an inlet 7 for connection with a source of fluid pressure, a return 8 for connection with a fluid reservoir, and motor ports 10a, 10b and 10c for connection with the fluid motors, at least two spools 2a, 2b or 2c reciprocable in the housing for control of the motors, the housing providing coring arrangement which can be adapted for " parallel " operation of the motors, i.e. any one or more or all valves may be operated to control the respective motor, or " series-parallel " operation, i.e. only one valve at a time may be operated. Each spool is of the four-way open-centre type and is biased to the neutral position by a spring 23. Longitudinal movement of a spool controls the flow of pressure fluid to either side of the respective piston in a motor through a pressure passage 9a, 9b or 9c and motor passage 10a, 10b or 10c whilst exhausting from the other side of the piston through motor passages 10a, 10b or 10c and exhaust ducts 11 at the opposite end of the valve spool. Fluid is fed at 7 past a relief valve 14 to the spool by-pass passages 6 and in the neutral position of the spools, to the outlet 8. For a " series-parallel " circuit each by-pass 6 communicates with a lateral extension 9e of the respective pressure passage 9a, 9b or 9c through a check valve 27a, 27b or 27c (Fig. 3, not shown), thus ensuring that only one valve spool can be operated at a time because the by-pass 6 upstream thereof must be open. For a " parallel " circuit, (Fig. 4, not shown), the by-passes 6 are short-circuited by drilled holes 30, 31a, 31b and 31c and sleeve members 32b and 32c which constitute seats for check valves 27b and 27c. The arrangement of Fig. 4 may be changed to a " series-parallel " circuit by the provision of plugs which close a passage 31a, 31b or 31c to the bore 30 and open it to a by-pass extension 6e. The bore 30 may be provided in the housing 4 as cast.
