Abstract

A heating plant for buildings is controlled by a mixing valve 2, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), which mixes the cold return flow through pipe 4 from the radiators with hot water from a boiler 1 and supplies the mixture to the radiators through a supply pipe 3. The valve is controlled by a bellows-type thermostat 5 connected by a capillary tube 7 with an outside temperature bulb 8, and is also controlled by the temperature of the supply, in that the capillary tube 7 is wound round the supply pipe 3 in a number of turns 10 adapted to the system. The amount of thermal fluid in the bulb 8 may be related to that in the turns 10 in a ratio such as 9 : 4 or 5 : 4 to give the desired heating curve 16 or 17, Fig. 3 (not shown). An electric heating resistance may be applied to the bulb 8 or turns 10. The mixing valve comprises a hollow cylindrical valve member 11 movable with a short travel between two seats and carrying a return tube 12 which extends into the boiler. The thermostat is adjustable by the usual setting knob 6.
