Abstract

1,048,306. Flexible cables. BOSTON INSULATED WIRE & CABLE CO. Oct. 7, 1964, No. 40828/64. Heading H1A. The Figure shows a lift cable intended to provide adequate flexibility or stiffness without wearing itself or fouling the cage or shaft walls. This is achieved by allowing considerable circumferential movement to the layers of conductors 32, 34, 36 so that they can accommodate bending while the stiffness is controlled by the sheaths 40, 42, 44 of the cable. The cable consists of a central strengthening member 30 around which are laid three relatively loose layers of conductors 32, 34, 36 the angle of lay of these conductors being between 65 and 68 degrees. Next a cotton braid 40 with a lay angle of 45 degrees is applied. Its lay angle is sufficient to ensure that it contributes some stiffness to the cable but it does not grip the conductors and acts merely as a cushion. Next, two tapes 42 are applied. They are made of a woven cotton with a backing of resilient yielding material such as rubber and are wound at an angle exceeding 45 degrees so that the warp contributes to the stiffness of the cable. Outside this is a braid 54 consisting of non-metallic threads with a lay angle of more than 45 degrees. The stiffness of this sheath provides the majority of the stiffness of the cable; it is impregnated with asphalt, rubber or plastic.
