Abstract

1,048,051. Oil seals. BORG-WARNER CORPORATION. Feb. 18, 1964, No. 6762/64. Heading F2B. An oil seal for a shaft, e.g. an engine crankshaft 11, comprises a rubber &c. sealing ring 19 formed by two abutting semi-circular segments each comprising an outer peripheral portion 21 of wedge-shaped cross-section reinforced by an embedded rigid half-ring 23 of greater dimension radially than axially and an inner peripheral portion 23 having an obliquely directed sealing lip 24, the portion 21 of the ring being mounted in a corresponding wedge-shaped groove 16 in the shaft housing 13 and a surface 25 on the lip 24 engaging the shaft. Annular ribs 28, 29, 30 on the face 27 of the ring engage the adjacent wall 18 of the groove 16. One end of each segment is radial, whilst the other end is moulded at a slight angle from a radius.
