Abstract

1,047,904. Automatic voltage control. VAN DER HEEM N.V. March 31, 1965 [April 3, 1964], No.13714/65. Heading G3R. A voltage regulator comprises rectifiers 2, 3 for deriving an unsmoothed unidirectional voltage from a transformer 1, a pre-regulator switching element 5 such as a transistor or thyristor, a buffer capacitor 6, a series regulating element 7, e.g. a transistor, output terminals 8, 9, and a conventional differential amplifier 10, associated with a voltage reference source 11 in the form of a battery, Zener diode, or glow discharge tube, for controlling the element 7 in dependence upon output voltage variations. The switching of transistor 5 is controlled by a bi-stable device 12 which together with a Zener diode 15, is connected into the circuit as shown. When the unsmoothed voltage from rectifiers 2, 3 falls to zero, the device 12 is switched to a first state in which it renders transistor 5 conductive; when the voltage across the series transistor 7 reaches a maximum desired value determined by Zener diode 15, the device 12 is switched to a second state to render transistor 5 non-conductive. The pre-regulating element 5 is thus controlled so that the series element 7 is protected against excess voltage and thus excess heat dissipation.
