Abstract
1,019,483. Automatic voltage control. ROTAX Ltd. Aug. 11, 1964 [Sept. 13, 1963], No. 36134/63. Heading G3R. A voltage regulator for an alternator includes means for reducing the alternator field current when a control signal, which varies with the square of the alternator output voltage, exceeds a predetermined value. As shown, the field 33 of an alternator 5 is energized from a D.C. source (not illustrated by way of an amplifier 31. A D.C. voltage proportional to the alternator output voltage is derived from a transformer 8 and rectifier 12, 14, 15, 16 and is applied to lines 11 and 13 which are interconnected through resistors 17, 18,19 and 20 associated with Zener diodes 22, 23, 24 connected to line 11 as shown. In use, as the voltage between lines 11,13 rises, the Zener diodes 22, 23, 24 break down successively to maintain constant the voltages across resistors 17, 18, 19, the values of the components being so chosen that the voltage signal across resistor 20 approximates to the square of the alternator output voltage. This voltage signal is applied by way of an integrating circuit 25, 27 to the base of a transistor 26 having its emitter connected to line 13 over a reference Zener diode 28 and its collector connected to the amplifier 31. When the voltage across capacitor 27 exceeds a value determined by the breakdown voltage of Zener diode 28, transistor 26 conducts and causes the amplifier 31 to reduce the field current.
