Abstract

1,047,328. Toothed gearing; belt gearing. E. R. BROOKE. June 25, 1963, No. 25279/63. Addition to 885,427. Heading F2Q. A toothed gear comprises two pinions 22, 29, one 22 having sinuous and/or zig-zag ribs 23 which mesh complementary grooves 24 in the other gear 29. The ribs and grooves may, as shown, be in anti-phase to prevent axial thrusts, or may, Fig. 5 (not shown), be in phase, or may, Figs. 7-10 (not shown), be staggered. In Fig. 11 (not shown) one rib and groove is sinuous and the other straight. In Fig. 12 (not shown) a single rib on one gear engages a single groove in the other gear and one of the gears is formed with flanges which overlap the sides of the other gear. In Fig. 15 (not shown) the gears are bevel gears and in Fig. 16 (not shown) the gears are a pinion and internal annulus. The gears may be of non-circular shape and spring urged towards one another. The gears may be formed by bolting together a series of plates 51, 52, Fig. 13 (not shown), the former 51 of which have a sinuous or zig-zag periphery whilst the latter 52 are small discs. In Fig. 2 the ribbed gear 5 of a gear pair drives a positive drive belt 7 having longitudinally extending sinuous grooves 8 which co-operate with the ribs on the gear and other driven pulleys. The belt 7 may, Fig. 3 (not shown) be formed with grooves on both sides so that driven pulleys 12 . . . 15 engaging opposite sides are positively driven in opposite directions.
