1,046,967. Combined spark ignition and flame safeguard systems for burners. NORTH WESTERN GAS BOARD. Nov. 17, 1964 [Nov. 20, 1963], No.45722/63. Heading F4F. A combined spark ignition and flame safeguard system for a town gas, or town gas-air burner comprises a spark electrode 13, Figs. 1, 2 (not shown), and a burner plate 11 forming a spark gap in the flame zone, a flame detector 24 responsive to the electrical conductivity of the spark gap, and a switch 21 which engages either a contact 22 to connect the spark gap with a transformer secondary 20 for ignition of the flame, or a contact 23 to connect the spark gap with the flame detector 24 for sensing of the flame. While the conductivity of the spark gap remains high, the supply of gas is maintained; when low, a shut-off valve in the gas supply is activated. The transformer primary 27 is supplied with A.C. or interrupted D.C. via a switch 26. The switch 21 may be located elsewhere in the circuit of Fig. 3. The spark electrode 13 is enclosed in an insulating sleeve 14 spring-urged into sealing engagement with the burner plate 11, and electrical connection is made to the electrode 13 at 17 or 18. The transformer 28 may be disposed, Fig. 4 (not shown) within the burner body 10, or, Fig. 5 (not shown), within a housing 29 attached to the side of the burner body. In another embodiment. Fig. 1 (not shown), the sleeve 14 is otherwise sealed against the plate 11, and is supported from the body 10 by spacing members.
