Abstract

1,046,965. Fuel materials. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Aug. 5, 1964 [Aug. 20. 1963]. No. 32846/63. Heading G6C. Hafnium or a compound thereof is used as a burnable poison in an enriched nuclear fuel. Where the fuel is UC, the poison is HfC, and where the fuel is UO2, the poison is HfO2, and in these either of the fissile isotopes U235 or Pu239 can be used for enrichment purposes. The invention does not include the use of hafnium boride since in this material the isotope B10 is the effective poison, it having a considerably larger neutron captive crosssection than Hf. Sufficient hafnium is incorporated into the fuel to give a ratio fissile atoms: hafnium atoms in the range 1: 5 to 1: 10. A carbide fuel of the type described (UC-HfC) could be used in a high temperature gas-cooled reactor or as the anode of a gas- or liquid metal-cooled diode reactor. In the case of a water- or gas-cooled reactor, the carbide might conveniently be dispersed in a suitable metal matrix to form a cermet fuel.
