Abstract
1482991 Nuclear reactors PACIFIC NUCLEAR FUELS Inc 22 July 1974 [20 July 1973] 32378/74 Heading G6C A light water nuclear reactor comprises a core 1 made up of fuel rods containing thorium and uranium physically separated from one another, a baffle 2 surrounding the core, a barrel 3, a thermal shield 4, and a plurality of blanket arrays of fuel rods containing thorium only arranged at the positions 6, 7, 8 and 9 shown. The fuel rods in the core may comprise casings enclosing UO 2 pellets at the central parts of the rods and ThO 2 pellets at the ends of the rods. The pellets may be separated by moderator material or by spaces for the collection of fission gases. The pellets may be solid or annular. The irradiated thoruim contains U233 but only a very small amount of U232 and Th228; it may be mixed with natural or depleted uranium and the uranium extracted and concentrated. The uranium containing U233 may be used as nuclear fuel and the thorium recycled. Reference is made to Specification 1,482,992.
