Abstract

1,046,475. Valves. MARSHALL SONS & CO. Ltd. Oct. 2, 1964 [July 4, 1963], No. 26497/63. Heading F2V. In a three-way cock, adjacent ports 14, 15, opening into the cylindrical interior 2 of the body, are obturated in turn, in different angular positions of handle 9 attached to spindle 6, by a slipper 25 mounted on an arm 22 attached to support collar 21 keyed to the spindle 6 and, in a third angular position of the handle 9, ports 14 and 15 are in communication around annular space 30 and an exhaust port 29, in an insert 18 which is removable for repair, is obturated by a ball 28 which is radially displaceable within fork 26, 27, attached to collar 21, and seated by gravity or a light spring. The ports are preferably located with their axes in one plane. The slipper 25 may be mounted with 0.001 to 0.010 inch clearance from the surface 2 or may be slidably mounted on arm 22 and urged into contact by a spring. The support collar 21 may also be mounted eccentrically on spindle 6 or the surface 2 may be non-cylindrical to obtain a wedge effect. The operation of the cock may be restricted to a predetermined sequence, e.g. as a flow down sequence controlling cock for the water level indicator of a steam or hot water boiler by the engagement of a ratchet pawl 39, attached to handle 9, with ratchet teeth 38 upon quadrantshaped plate 36, the direction of movement being reversible only at the extremities 43, 45. Positioning of the handle is controlled by a rod 47 with an enlarged head 49 which runs in grooves 41, 42 each for a portion of the arc on the under and upper side respectively of the quadrant 36 and interconnected by a hole 44 through which the head 49 can pass; the valve sequences corresponding to positions 43, 44 and 45. The prong 31 of the fork is shaped to move the ball 28 positively out of seating engagement.
