Abstract

1,045,674. Printing - surfaces. COURTAULDS Ltd. May 22, 1963 [May 23, 1962; Sept. 5, 1962], Nos. 19799/62 and 33979/62. Heading B6C. [Also in Divisions B5 and F2] A forme for use in relief or intaglio printing is produced by casting a liquid polymerizable material within a hollow rotatable cylinder having a raised or indented design on its internal surface and effecting polymerization of the material in contact with the design while the cylinder is being rotated about its longitudinal axis. In one example, a design is prepared on a brass sheet by known photomechanical techniques and the sheet is rolled up and inserted in a rotatable copper cylinder which is chromium-plated on its internal surface and adapted to be readily dismantled. The brass sheet is centrifugally forced into place and doses of an epoxy resin and a catalyst are added to the rotating cylinder at intervals. After centrifugal moulding the printing cylinder formed is washed, dried, and heated in an oven to complete the hardening. The casting is subsequently mounted on a shaft with suitable end attachments to provide a gravure printing roller. The casting may have a reinforcement of fibre glass or of a rigid cylinder rotatably mounted within the outer cylinder during casting and adapted to be keyed with the resin. A light-sensitive colloid may itself be centrifugally deposited as a thin film on the internal surface of the rotating cylinder and the design production then occurs in situ. The design may alternatively be produced by a xerographic method. The casting cylinder may be provided with a main compartment and an auxiliary one separated by a weir so as to produce a cylinder of the desired diameter. The design-carrying brass sheet referred to above may be positioned on a liner of epoxy resin already formed by centrifugal moulding. The cast printing surface may be cut into sections or flattened for use on a flat plate.
