Abstract

A hardened steel ball is heated at 130 DEG C upwards for 1-15 hours in an oil bath to produce a permanent increase in volume of at least 0.25%. In a specific example an increase of 0.3-0.57% is achieved by heating for 12 hours at 200 DEG C. a steel ball containing 1% C., 0.25%Si, 0.35%Mn, 0.03%P, 0.025%S and 1.55%Cr.
