Abstract

A gripper shuttle 1 withdraws twice the length of weft required for one pick and lays the second, pick as it returns through the shed. In Fig. 1 (not shown) the length of the shuttle race is twice that of the fabric plus the length of the shuttle. In Fig. 4 (not shown) the weft 13 extends through an eye 22, through clamps (not shown), over the shuttle box, to a suction tube 18. On picking a cam 11 opens a spring catch 4 so that on closing it grips the weft; after the first pick is beaten up shears 17 cut the weft, the tube 18 descends and opens the clamp (not shown) so that pivoting of the eye 22 withdraws all but a small portion of the weft from the tube 18 which then rises so the clamp grips the weft in readiness for the third pick. On return of the shuttle for the second pick a cam 23 opens the catch 4, the shears 17 sever the weft and the cut end is sucked down a tube 24. To reduce the width of the sley a weft gatherer may be provided on the far side of the loom. The gatherer comprises a pivoted arm 33 which draws the weft through the shed and over fingers 34 which are radially adjustable for different fabric widths.
