Abstract

1,043,647. Spinning and finishing yarns; thread guides. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. May 24, 1965 [June 1, 1964], No. 22539/64. Headings DID and D1F. [Also in Division B5] Apparatus for transporting filaments comprises a gas ejector having a plurality of passages, each individual filament being passed through a separate passage. The ejector consists of a core 8 (Fig. 2) and an outer shell 9 (Fig. 3). The core 8 has a number of longitudinal parallel grooves 10 equally spaced around its periphery. Jet holes 12,13 towards the lower end of each groove communicate with the hollow interior of the core (Fig. 5, not shown) and enable air or other gas supplied to the tube 11 to pass from the interior of the core to the exterior. The shell 9 has a corresponding number of grooves 14, bevelled at the upper end 16, so that when the apparatus is assembled (Figs. 1 and 4, not shown) and locked by the key 18 (Fig. 3) which enters passages 19, 20, each filament has a separate path through the transporting apparatus. The apparatus may be fed with filaments from one or more spinnerets and may be mounted either adjacent to a spinneret face or some distance away as in Fig. 6 (not shown). The assembly of Fig. 6 is useful in the production of a batt of filaments especially of polyethylene terephthalate which are received from the spinneret. It is projected at collecting plate 22 to form a randomly laid batt 23 (Fig. 7, not shown). Filaments of polyamides, polyesters and polyolefins may be transported using the apparatus of the invention, which keeps the filaments apart but minimizes the accumulation of electrostatic charges and hence avoids subsequent difficulties in collection due to electrostatic repulsion.
