Abstract

1,043,271. Nuclear power plant. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. May 20, 1963, No. 20040/63. Heading G6C. In a nuclear reactor power plant, a turbine is supplied with steam from a boiling water reactor. The steam flow from the reactor to the turbine is adjusted by a valve, the setting of which is varied automatically in response to both the turbine speed and the internal pressure of the reactor container. The reactor control rods are moved in response to turbine speed and an over-speed device controls the valve independently of pressure. The rod control provides a long term change in reactivity while instantaneous reactor response is given by the reactor pressure control. To limit the loss of the self-regulating characteristics of the reactor, excessive changes in pressure are prevented by rendering the load control only partially responsive to the turbine load. The control signals are applied to the reactor through a rate limiter to prevent rapid reactor fluctuations in response to abrupt load charges.
