Abstract
A stencil sheet which can be cut both mechanically and by electric spark comprises a stencil tissue e.g. paper weighing less than 8 gms. per spare metre, and less than 0.0015 inches thick, strengthened with a modified polyamide resin, the tissue carrying on one face a stencil layer of relatively low electrical conductivity loaded with electrically conductive particles and capable of being cut mechanically. The stencil layer consists of a coating of a nitrocellulose solution plasticized to render it capable of being cut on a typewriter, the coating being made conductive by incorporating therein a highly conductive carbon or metallic particles, or preferably, a higher proportion of a carbon of lower conductivity; in the latter case, the puncturing of the stencil by an electric spark can be arranged so that the void produced is proportional to the applied voltage thus rendering possible the formation of continuous tone originals by facsimile reproduction. The tissue itself may have incorporated therein a highly conductive carbon, to reduce the electrical resistance of the tissue to that of the stencil layer.
