Abstract

[Also in Division B5] Yarns are delivered from a linear group of equally spaced feed points 3 in a wave form of substantially constant wave length, exceeding the distance between the outermost feed points by about the distance between two adjacent feed points, the yarns being secured together in this position. As shown, a carriage 1 carries yarn guides 2 which terminate in feed points 3, each receiving a yarn from a bobbin on a creel. Carriage 1 is reciprocated along rails 5 between extreme positions in which feed points 3 are above one of the moving endless chains or belts 6, 6a which carry hooks 8 to engage the yarns. The yarns slip off hooks 8 as they round pulleys 71. The yarns may be treated with adhesive before laying or by passing the lattice through an adhesive bath or spray while still carried on hooks 8, the structure may be heated and/or pressed between rollers. Two or more layers of yarns may be superimposed. Alternatively, a layer of plastic 10 is fed from roll 9 between belts 6, 6a and passes with the lattice between rollers 11, 12, thermoplastic material being fed to the nip between the rollers so that a composite material 15 is formed. The yarns may be laid at an angle of 45 degrees to the longitudinal axis or at 60 degrees with further yarns laying parallel to the axis to hold the yarns in place and enable the plastic to extend to the edges of the fabric. The lattice may be used as a reinforcement for sheet material as described in Specification 1,042,135.
