Abstract
1,041,582. Photographic apparatus. T. RAPPEL. May 30, 1963 [March 9, 1962], 9246/62. Heading G2A. Apparatus for producing shadings for cartographic purposes comprises light sources arranged round a camera lens to illuminate a relief having surface between glossy and matt, the light sources being arranged so that their beams impinge on the relief at such an angle that they are reflected into the camera lens. As shown, a camera lens a has surrounding it a series of small light projectors d arranged in such manner that the axes of their beams meet at a point n situated on the opposite side of a relief b. The light reflected from the relief b is in the form of divergent cones the central axes of which vary according to the angle of slope of the reflecting surface of the relief, resulting in flat surfaces of the relief reflecting most of the incident light to the lens, and the most steeply sloped parts reflecting litte or none. In a modification Fig. 5 (not shown) the projectors are arranged about an aperture in a diaphragm which scans the relief, a converging lens being situated between the diaphragm and the camera lens.
