Abstract

[Also in Divisions B2 and G2] A planographic printing plate blank comprises a plastics base layer 10, a plastics coating 11 on said layer, a first hydrophilic layer 12, and a second hydrophilic layer 13 which forms the planographic surface, all said layers being preferably translucent. The layer 10 may be of polyethylene terephthalate polyester, nylon tetrafluoroethylene, polyvinyl fluoride, cellulose acetate, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene or chlorinated rubber. The coating 11 advantageously consists of vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride, polyvinyl butyral, polystyrene, or polymers of acrylic and methacrylic acids and esters. Cellulose acetate or ethyl cellulose are suitable materials for the coating if the layer 10 is a cellulose film. The coating may include a partial solvent for the layer 10 and/or the layer may be frosted or pitted by sand blasting. Fillers such as clay, silica, titanium dioxide or calcium carbonate may be included in the coating. The layer 12 comprises an aqueous dispersion of a colloid binder such as casein, zein, gelatin, albumin, polyvinyl alcohol, or carboxymethyl cellulose, a filler such as clay, and a partial solvent for the coating 11. The layer 13 may be of polyvinyl alcohol, carboxymethyl cellulose and salts thereof, sodium alginate, casein, albumin, or oxidized cellulose and preferably includes large amounts of a filler such as clay, silica, or titanium dioxide. The layer 13 is imaged thermographically, Fig. 2 (not shown).
