Abstract
1,041,144. Variable-pitch marine propellers. T. HINDMARCH. March 2, 1965 [March 25, 1964], No. 12556/64. Heading B7V. A mechanism 29 to 37 (the only Figure, not shown) for controlling the pitch of a marine propeller is coupled to a lever 27, which is connected at 38 to a governor-controlled fuelregulator of a Diesel engine driving the propeller, by a hydraulic transducer or movement-sensing device A and a hydraulic servo-motor or correcting device B to render the pitch appropriate to the output of the engine. The transducer comprises a spool valve-member 2 coupled by a rod 1 through a spring-loaded safety-link 41 to the lever 27, said member being slidably lodged in a cylindrical sleeve 4 which is axially movable in a stationary cylinder against the action of a compression spring 5. The sleeve is closed at one end by a plug 11 whereas the cylinder is connected by a passage 12 and a tube to an inlet passage 13 in the motor B. In operation, pressurized oil supplied to an annular space or recess 7 in sleeve 4 through a passage 6 enters a channel 10 through transverse ports 9 in the sleeve when the valve-member is moved by actuation of the lever 27. Pressure in the channel 10 is communicated to the plug 11 so that the ports 9 are closed by the sleeve and to the lower end of a spool valve-member 15 in the motor B, the member 15 being raised against the action of a spring 16 to allow pressurized oil to enter spaces 19, 25 on either side of a piston 20 from a passage 14 through a flow-restricting orifice 18 and a passage 23, respectively. When the lever 27 is actuated so as to displace the valve-member 2 towards the plug 11, the oil in the channel 10 is released to a space containing the spring 5 through the ports 9, and oil in the space 19 is released through the orifice 18 and a passage 39 whilst the piston 20 is displaced upwardly by the oil in the space 25. Movement of the piston in either direction effects a corresponding change in the position of a sliding member in a slotted link 29 forming a part of a manual-control lever 30 in the pitch-controlling mechanism.
