Abstract

An aqueous composition comprises an oil-modified alkyd resin having an acid number below 30, a hydroxyl number below 120, a hydroxyl equivalent above 460, which has been neutralized with ammonia, an amine or a quaternary ammonium base, and a volatile amphiphilic compound containing at least one free hydroxy group and at least one ether linkage. Suitable resins derive from e.g. glycerol, trimethylol propane or pentaerythritol and phthalic, isophthalic, terephthalic, maleic, adipic, citric or aconitic acids, modified by e.g. castor, dehydrated castor, linseed, coconut, piecenut, wood, oiticica or cottonseed oils, or by colophony or copal resin acids. Suitable amphiphilic compounds are the mono- and polyalkylene glycol monoethers. The compositions may be used as varnishes, enamels and impregnating agents, and may also contain other solvents, phenol-, cresol-, urea-, thiourea- or melamine-formaldehyde resins, and/or pigments and fillers. In examples, alkyds modified by linseed, oiticica or dehydrated castor oils are dissolved in ethylene glycol n-propyl, n-butyl or n-butyloxyethyl ether and water and neutralized with methyl isopropylamine, diethanolamine, triethylamine or tetramethylammonium hydroxide. To these are optionally added methanol, propanol, butanol, sec-butanol, hexamethylene glycol or ethylene glycol phenyl ether, and TiO2, bone black, ZnS, barytes or Fe2O3.ALSO:Compositions for use as varnishes, enamels or impregnating agents comprise an aqueous solution of an oil-modified alkyd resin of acid number <30 and hydroxyl number <120 which has been neutralized with ammonia, an amine or a quarternary ammonium base and a volatile compound containing at least one free hydroxy group and at least one other group. Other solvents, and aminoplast or phenoplast resins; and fillers and pigments may be present (see Division C3). The compositions may be applied by e.g. brushing, spraying, dipping, rolling, casting or electrocoating to surfaces of e.g. metal, wood, plastics, paper or pasteboard.
