Abstract

1,040,498. Continuous casting processes. H. A. FROMSON. Sept. 1, 1964, No. 35672/64. Heading B3F. In a method of continuously casting a flexible band of metal, a hollow internally cooled drum 14, Fig. 1 (not shown), of high thermal conductivity is rotated in a body 12 of the fusible material, on which floats a body of a retaining material 13 of lower thermal conductivity and a lower melting point than the fusible material, thereby freezing on the surface of the drum a layer 25 of the retaining material and then a layer 26 of the fusible material, and continuously stripping the frozen layer from the drum. The retaining material may be the inorganic salts &c. specified in Specification 873,487 which is referred to. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the drum carries annular band 21 of a refractory material to form annular grooves in which a number of bands 33 are formed.
