Abstract

1,040,125. Corrugating tubes. RAYMOND INTERNATIONAL Inc. Sept. 11, 1964 [Sept. 20, 1963], No. 37205/64. Heading B3E. Apparatus for corrugating metal tubing 15, Fig. 6 (not shown), comprises a mandrel 12 over which the tube is telescoped, co-operating corrugating means 20, 22 for rotatably engaging the tube internally and externally at one side of the mandrel and co-operating supporting means 21, 23 for rotatably engaging the tube internally and externally at the opposite side of the mandrel for resisting the force produced thereon by the corrugating means. The initial tube 15 may be formed by helical winding or skelping and welding. Mandrel 12 is fixed at one end and carries at its other end on taper roller bearings, Fig. 8 (not shown), a plain supporting roller 21 and a grooved corrugating roller 20 which are inclined in opposite directions for producing helical corrugations. The rollers are exchangeable to suit the diameter of the tube and the helix angle. An internally grooved ring 22 is rotatably mounted in a support 16 and driven through chain drive 40, 41, 42 and shaft 43 from a motor 18, Fig. 1 (not shown). A supporting ring 23 is rotatably mounted in a support 17 and driven through a chain drive and shaft 43<SP>1</SP> by another motor 19, Fig. 1 (not shown). The supports 16, 17 are pivotal about fulcrums 51, 51<SP>1</SP> for setting the helix angle; the supports are also mounted to pivot about the axes of shafts 43, 43<SP>1</SP> by fluid pressure rams 57, 57<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 5 (not shown), for moving the external rings into inoperative positions to facilitate feeding the tube over the mandrel. The helical corrugations may be on a single or double start thread.
