Abstract
1,039,821. Extracting continuously-cast lengths. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION. Feb. 20, 1964 [March 4, 1963], No. 7217/64. Heading B3F. [Also in Division H2] A travelling receptacle 2, driven by an electric motor 7, lowers severed lengths of a continuous casting 1. A sensing finger 11, in its uppermost position when the receptacle is empty, is coupled to a contact controller 20 (see Division H2). The motor 7 causes high speed upward travel of the receptacle 2, but upon approach of the receptacle and casting 1 to predetermined spacing therebetween, finger 11 is partially depressed whereby controller 20 reduces the motor speed. Upon further partial depression of the sensing finger, all contacts are opened to stop receptacle movement. Upon further approach of casting 1 and receptacle 2, but short of actual contact between the casting 1 and fixed receptacle fingers 10, the sensing finger 11 is actuated so that the receptacle moves downwardly at low speed. When the casting 1 engages fixed fingers 10 and the sensing finger 11 is fully depressed after severance of a length the downward speed of the receptacle is increased to remove the severed section from interference with the oncoming product. The low speeds of receptacle travel are such as to allow the receptacle to follow the movements of the lower end of the unsevered product, a heatinsulating air gap being maintained between the casting and fingers 10.
