Abstract
Magnetic films of Ni-Fe-Mo are deposited electrolytically from an aqueous acidic plating bath including Ni++, Fe++, and Mo O4- ions as the only platable ions at a pH of 3 to 5 with a cathode current density of 6 to 12 m A/cm2, the nickel ion content being 0.45 to 0.60N, and ratio ranges on a normality basis being 0.03 to 0.06 for Fe++/Ni++ and 0.016 to 0.036 for molybdate/nickel. The bath temperature is between 25 and 30 DEG C.and plating is effected for 50 to 150 seconds. The baths are typically sulphate baths and may contain also citric acid, saccharin, sodium lauryl sulphate and NaCl. Typically a cleaned and polished glass or plastic base is coated by vapour deposition with gold or chromium followed by gold to render the whole of it or selected areas conductive for electroplating. Alternatively a polished metal base may be used. A magnetic field may be applied during electroplating. The ternary alloy forming the magnetic film consists on a weight percentage basis of 60 to 77% Ni, 13 to 24% Fe and 10 to 16% Mo, preferably 63 to 72% Ni, 18 to 23% Fe and 10 to 14% Mo.
