Abstract

1,039,135. Electron beam focusing and deflecting apparatus. TEMESCAL METALLURGICAL CORPORATION. June 3, 1964 [June 6, 1963], No. 23048/64. Heading H1D. A bombardment heating method comprises the steps of generating a magnetic field adjacent material to be heated enclosed in a high vacuum region, directing electrons transversely into the field for deflection upon the material, and controllably skewing the lines of force of the field relative to their original directions to vary the impact pattern of the electrons upon the material to control its heating. As shown, the material is contained in crucible 14 mounted on platform 19 tiltable by means of crank 22 to pour the molten metal into a mould 18, enclosed in enclosure 11 with evacuating means 13 and seal lock 17 to permit material to be placed in crucible 14. A row of polepieces 46 is mounted on each side of crucible 14 and electrode 27 of electron gun 26 with a magnetic field between the rows which causes electrons from electrode 27 to be focused in a beam 38 on to the target. One arrangement of magnetic circuit is described with reference to Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), and an alternative arrangement with reference to Figs. 5, 6, 7 (not shown).
